it is a common belief that mothers are greatly in charge of parenting their children compared to fathers. However, I strongly believe that now is the time to fix such prejudice in terms of rising women employment and growing importance of paternal roles. While both mother and father holding jobs for enough income to raise their children, it is fair to share the responsibility about parenting equally. Several decades ago, due to gender disparity, when women employment rates were lower compared to men, women had no choice but to stay at home to take taking care of households and be in charge of all household chores while fathers are were in work making enough money for their families. But recently, such gender inequality to employment is partly resolved, so that many of mothers are working just as their husbands. As mothers’ responsibility to take care of children at home shrinks, tasks like parenting and child-caring should be divided fairly. According to the recent research, the importance about maternal role at home is diminishing, whilst more and more women are getting employed. That is, it is more imperative than ever before to expand paternal roles for their children. Furthermore, under the rule of patriarchal society, the father’s role for family tend to be underestimated because of their endeavor at work. However, if men want to be the significant family member as a father, they must put more effort on parenting and share the same amount of responsibility just as their wives. According to a recent survey, it has been proven that fathers who focused on works than parenting tend to get less affection and respect from their children. The children of such fathers answered that they don’t feel strong connectedness with their fathers. This case reveals that father’s role which used to be overlooked should be expanded for their healthy relationships with children. To sum up, unlike the past that prejudices and patriarchal rules put considerable amount of pressure towards mothers to stay at home for kids, father and mother should take the same important roles as parents while gender inequality at work and home diminishes and the paternal roles are considered just as important as mother’s. |
