Crime in society has been a growing concern in many countries, and the governments are investing their resources to improve the ways to reduce it. Some people often think that the current long prison sentences cannot be the way, but others believe that implementing them can be effective enough. In this essay, both views will be discussed with my own opinion.
Actually, crimes can be reduced when criminals have the opportunities of education and employment. They might be able to use their time that would otherwise be spent in a prison to participate in making the better society for the public. Also, they will not act in a violent way because their behaviours will be under supervision. These practices can change their characters and help them live like, (이 쉼표가 들어가야 의미가 조금 더 명확하게 전달될 것 같습니다.) and with other people in the same society.
Meanwhile, long prison sentences can work as deterrents for serious crimes. In some countries, their weak punishment often make many criminals commit or be involved in crimes. If they are acknowledged that anyone who takes criminal acts can be sentenced to long prison terms, the imprisonment in itself will be enough to scare them and discourage cruelty in a long term as well. Thus, long imprisonment can prevent many crimes from occurring.
In conclusion, I personally believe that prison sentences should be lengthened because long term imprisonment has a power for many criminals and can reduce them in the first place. This different and stronger punishment can change their behaviours and attitudes towards crime and violence. |
