Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
The public transport system is one of many useful public systems which a number of governments have put in place for their citizens to improve the quality of life within the fast-paced modern society. Some arguably claim that it is more important to develop railways instead of undertaking road works. I agree with this idea and will explain my reasons.
The main reason why I think the development of railways is more required is that enhanced quality of railway service has a profound contribution in reducing the personal use of private vehicles. As a decreased number of private car use hugely affect in improving traffic congestion on the roads and minimise air pollution by reducing CO2 emission, it is expected that the development of railways brings more environmental benefits than making the better road condition.
Moreover, an increased number of train tracks enable more frequent services to be provided which consequently allows people to utilise it in a timely and efficient manner in their everyday life. For instance, the frequent railway service may offer many alternative routes to the desired destination regardless of locations and time in order to be punctual without having concern of being stuck in a traffic jam. Traffic congestion is often considered as a time waste on the road which can be easily prevented by establishing reliable railway system.
In conclusion, because utilising trains has considerably positive impacts on reducing environmental pollution such as air pollution, I agree that governments should have more budget to undertake railway development rather than spending money to develop the roads.
