The line graph illustrates the percentage of people who are more than the age of 65 from 1940 to 2040 in Japan, Sweden, and the USA. Overall, there has been a great increase in the proportion of the population aged 65 and over in three different countries over the 100-year period. The figure for the elderly population in percentage shows the most significant change in Japan. In the year 1940, the figure for the percentage of people aged more than 65 in Japan, Sweden, and the USA was around 9%, 7%, and 5% respectively. The elderly population in proportion in America and Sweden rose slightly to 10% and around 9%, while the older population in Japan went down to approximately 2.5% in twenty years. From 1980 to 2000, the percentage of population more than the age of 65 in Sweden overtook that for the USA. Nearly between 2000 and 2020, the figure for the USA proportion of the elderly population remained unchanged at 14%. Throughout the same period, the population aged 65 and over in Sweden fluctuated from 15% to 18%. Older people percentage in Japan will overtake that for America from 2020 to 2040. In the year of 2040, Japan’s elderly population in percentage will reach a peak of around 28%.
