It is a common belief that personal information of criminals should
be protected considering possible adverse effects on related people. However,
there is a more persuasive argument that the data should be shared among public
to guarantee a security of the local community.
On the other hand, by sharing information, it is possible to
victimize innocent people who are directly or indirectly related with the criminals,
such as family, relatives or friends. In fact, the problem has been recognized
after a boy committed a suicide. The boy could not stand for partial treatment of his neighborhood who become aware of the fact that his father committed a crime. Given that the he was not involved in delinquency of his father, the suppression was
basically unfair.
Nevertheless, criminal information sharing plays a vital role in ensuring
the security of the residents. It not only make people monitor carefully on actions of the offenders but also make them notify the police in advance with their suspicious behavior. For instance,
in Korea, people can easily search for the information of criminals who
committed a sexual violence through a mobile application. The police declared
that there was a significant drop in a criminal rate after publicizing the data and it clearly evidences that the sharing information benefits overall
safety of a local community.
To sum up, while it is apparent that the information of the criminal
should be somewhat guarded for the innocent associated people, the overall safety of others originated from sharing information of offenders should be more prioritized. |
