Your Answer ▼ Some people consider English to be more important to learn at school than local languages. I don’t agree with the idea that everyone has to learn English.
If you want to live in another country, you may need to learn their language. However, most people decide to spend their entire lives in their home country. In real life, we usually do not use foreign languages. Developing communication skills and grammar is more important. For traveling abroad, guided tours will always help you travel smoothly.
However, all students should have an opportunity to find their interests or talents. For this reason, schools should provide education in English. Like art or music classes, schools have a responsibility to show students that there are various skills they can acquire. Language is one of them, and especially English, as it is considered a global language. If someone is talented in learning languages, it will give them a new way of life and they can find more job opportunities in the future.
Additionally, local languages will not disappear easily. We naturally learn our mother language from parents, friends, and even television. Learning English does not mean it will be our first language. Getting rid of one's first language is definitely not easy. For instance, in 1919, Japan tried to ban the Korean language during their colonization period. They continued this policy for approximately 30 years, but eventually failed. Worrying about the survival of local languages is not a serious concern in this case.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that English is not essential for everyone, but for giving opportunities to students, every school should include English in their curriculum. |
