When we were young, we were told not to lie in any case. Lies create another lie, thus, whatever the reason may be, lying is always bad, parents would tell to their children. However, as we grow up, we often hear people saying that white lies are sometimes okay. Deception can sometimes save a person from troubles and build up intimacy between people. Yet, is deception ever justified? Even though the purpose of deception is not harmful, often it eventually hurts others as well as oneself.
To take an example from a famous American novel
After Tom successfully makes Daisy disappointed in Gatsby, he becomes triumphant and lets Daisy take Gatsby’s car on their way home. Daisy drives the car, not so calmed down and accidentally hits a woman on the street who happens to be Tom’s girlfriend. Overwhelmed by accidental murder she committed, Daisy and Gatsby drive away quickly. However, people point Gatsby as a murderer as it was his car and they thought he was driving it. He deceives people and justice by not telling the truth in order to protect Daisy. Despite his good will, he is falsely accused and gets shot by the victim’s husband, George, who has mistaken Gatsby to be his wife’s lover. As seen, Gatsby’s deception eventually leads him to death and creates another misunderstanding.
Deception not only hurts others but also oneself. Hence, deception cannot be ever justified, even if it’s a small white lie, as we know from our kindergarten lesson from ages ago.
