Peru is the third largest country in South America. It has 27 million population that consists of people from different nations. Peru was historically influenced by different cultures such as African and Asian and European culture. We can say that Peru is the country that has diversity of culture.
Peru is divided into three geographic regions: the coastal region, the Andes, and the Amazon basin. Each region has different customs.
In the Andes, the Quechua- speaking people are living. They are Catholics because they were influenced by Spanish conquerors. But the Quechua people have their own custom that has descended to the present day. In the rituals of marriage, the couple marry in the catholic church but before they get married they live together to be ready for their marriage life. According to the custom of the Quechua, the couple can officially marry after their baby was born.
Peruvian jungle is populated by a number of diverse of indigenous people with their own language and culture. The people in the Amazon are called Amerindian, translating “ The sons of Adam and Eve”.The problem of the region is that it has very poor soils. Therefore, people live on the small land between the large rivers, therefore, they practice infanticide in order to avoid the population growth. The tradition of Amerindians is diverse, but shamans plays significant role.
The coast consists of dry and arid desert regions but many small rivers flow from the Andes region. Lima , the capital city of Peru is situated in the coastal desert, and developed as the center of industry. About eight million people live in Lima. The economy of the coastal region is associated with agriculture and grape production. The other important product is oil.
The cuisine of Peru are diverse and it is influenced by immigrants from Africa, Asia and Europe. Peruvian cuisine has developed 500 years ago when the Spanish people arrived in Peru. The European conquerors brought culinary techniques and ingredients such as black olives, grapes and dairy products. Also, they brought African slaves who worked in the cuisines of the noble and the wealthy. Peruvian cuisine is known as fusion cuisine
In the coastal region, Ceviche is the most famous cuisine. It is a plate of diced raw white fish which marinated in lime juice and hot pepper then it is served with
raw onions, sweet potato and corn. This is one of the representative cuisine of Peru.
The Andean cooking is a primitive style of cooking. To prepare it, a hole is dug in the soil and stones are heated for several hours. The stones are placed inside the hole with different kinds of meats and vegetables.
In the jungle area, there are juanes which is a kind of tamale stuffed with chicken, rice and turtle soup and wrapped with banana leaves.
Peruvian dance has different styles in different geographical regions. But the most famous dance the Marinera. It is the national dance of Peru. Marinera is a romantic couple dance, and it is based on the courtship of young lovers. The couple dance, with the sound of guitars, drums, and bungles. Also, there is Marinera dance festival in Lima which is the biggest festival in Peru.
Peru is the country that have the diversity of culture according to different geographical regions.
