In summary, I believe that the aforementioned explanations sufficiently prove the advantages of visiting a big city and having a foreign friend outwigh the advantages of going to museums. It is more effective to understand a foeign country by experiencing the modern atmosphere of the city and having a friend who can explain the cultural differences. First of all, visiting a big city of the country is a better way to get to know a country than going to museums because the big city can reflect the most recent information and atmosphere of the country while museums usually represent the past. My personal experience can explains this well. I'm a Brazilian, and I visited South Korea last year as a foreign exchange student. At first, my Korean friend took me to the national museum where it had many different garments from old ages of Korea. It was fun to look around but as i got out of the museum, It was astonished by the scenery of Seoul, the captial city and the biggest city in Korea. They had many huge buildings and foreign clothing shops that I'm familiar with. Although I felt about this country quite exotic as I looked around the museums, its big city seems really familiar so I could enjoy the feeling. In addition, I found that many people were walking extremely fast in the streets, which later my friend told me that's one of the characteristcis of Korea, a hasty nature. Visiting museums was entertaining while walking in the midst of Seoul was definitely more helpful for me to understand the country. In addition, having a friend from that country can also be a better way to understand the country than going to museums since it is a more direct and clear way to experience and understand a foreign culture. Although it is a good way to visit museums to have a glance over the country's culture and what people have valued. However, having a conversation with a foreign friend is highly effective to learn the foreign culture. A recent research conducted by a Mary Pitts from Cornell University can be used to support this idea. She asked 10,000 foreign students in the United States what is the most crucial factor that helped them to understand and adapt to the life in the US. The most frequent answer was friends and to be specific, Amercian friends. The research showed that friends are beneficial not only during their everyday lives, but also when they face some difficulties in new surroundings. This is because much of the barrier that foreign face are derived from the poor understanding of the cultrual differences and friends can exain what Americans think and why they act in that way so that they can understand. Although museums can explain the cultural features to some extent, it is more effective to have friend. |
