Some people might think that teachers evaluate each other. However, in my opinion, it is better for them to be assessed by students for two following reasons. To begin with, the most important thing to consider in teacher evaluation is the goal of teaching. To be specific, teachers are jobs which educate and communicate with students. That is, the job is for students, so the perception and thinking of students have to be prioritized when it comes to evaluating teachers. Furthermore, this evaluation would finally affect on students again because the result of the assessment could be motivation or driving force for teachers to change their teaching style or communication pattern with students. As a result, students could be given more help from the evaluation. For example, when I was a high school senior student, my science teacher was negligent in class, so he got the worst assessment in teacher evaluation conducted when the semester was over. As a consequence, he should be moved to freshman class. On top of that, other teachers’ evaluation would not be helpful for them because they cannot see each other objectively. Actually, teacher evaluation in schools would be reflected to their wage, promotion, or class arrangement. Most teachers may want to get more money, promote early, and be placed to easier classes. Thus, it would be natural for them to evaluate themselves benevolently, and in contrast, to assess their colleagues negatively. In this sense, I experienced similar situation. I am working as a math teacher in an elementary school. So, I regularly evaluate other teachers in terms of teaching methods. Last semester, my several colleagues gave me the lowest grades in some conditions, so my next promotion became impossible. To sum up, it is necessary for teachers to be evaluated from their students because the ultimate goal of the teacher’s existence is to help students in various fields, and their opinion would be more objective than that of other teachers. In this regard, I firmly believe that teachers must be evaluated by students. |
