Some people think that to increase the prices of gasoline and electricity
does not encourage energy conservation. However, in my opinion, it works
because people care about money and companies would come up with new ways to
save energy.
To
begin with, people are sensitive to fluctuations of energy prices. If the expense
for fuel is expected to elevate whereas their incomes are as same as they were,
the many will change their energy consuming habits. For example, 5 years ago, an
extensive blackout happened during a summer season. It turned out that too many
people consumed electricity to activate air conditioners on the day which leaded to the
power shortage so the government decided to raise the electric charges as a
solution for the excessive use of electric power. As a result, people reduced hours
to turn on their cooling devices in order to avoid enormous charges.
On
top of that, many companies will try to contrive energy efficient machines or
systems. Since the growth of energy prices means higher production costs, corporations
have to invent new energy saving ways to maintain their profits. There was a
study conducted by the Seoul National University to determine what factors boost
enterprises to develop alternative energies. What they found is that many businesses
began to operate R&D for substitute energy because their manufacturing costs
were swollen corresponding to upsurges of energy costs rather than they really
concerned about environment preservation.
To
sum up, people do not want to spend much energy paying big money and high fuel
costs stimulate companies create energy saving alternatives. In this regard, I believe
that to increase the prices of petrol and electric power will induce energy preservation. |
