passage, carbon sequestration can be approached to reduce atmospheric CO2 in
numerous ways. However, the lecturer disputes the reading passage’s claim by providing three
reasons.
First, the lecturer argues
that adding iron to the ocean would not increase the amount of phytoplankton.
As iron increases in the ocean, the population of phytoplankton increases,
making the amount of nitrogen to be decreased which is needed for phytoplankton’s living. Eventually, the
population would decrease and little CO2 will be stored in the ocean. This
contradicts the reading passage’s opinion that
increasing iron would reduce atmospheric CO2.
Second, the lecturer asserts
that artificial wetlands cannot be the way to sequester CO2. Although natural
wetland prevents oxygen from entering the soil, only 23% of the efficiency is
shown when using artificial wetlands. Moreover, It takes long time to develop
artificial wetland and functioning them. This counters the reading passage’s argue that artiificial wetland
helps CO2 to be stored in the ground.
Finally, the lecturer points
out that CO2 cannot be stored in coal mines. Coal mine contains methine, and it
is composed of carbon. Therefore, when Coal is burned, it provides CO2 and some
can leak out. This refutes the reading passage’s claim that coal mines reduce CO2 in atmosphere. |
