Some people think
that fewer possessions lead to more happiness. However, in my opinion, owning
more possessions bring more contentment since it gives self-esteem as well as
convenience.
To begin with,
having more possessions enables people to build self-esteem. When people have
many objects in their house, the feel better. To be specific, they feel that
they have enough economic power to purchase those goods. They also feel that
their houses are less empty. According to a study conducted by a research team
in the Psychology department of Tokyo University, purchasing products is
beneficial for mental health. The research also showed that decorating their
homes enables people to have greater self-esteem. The results suggest that
people are more likely to feel happiness with many possessions in their houses.
Moreover, having
many possessions improve the standard of living. New gadgets produced makes
people’s lives easier as they make works convenient. To elaborate in detail,
devices produced with modern technologies, such as mobile phones, laptops or
desktops, improve the quality of life significantly by providing entertainment
as well as easy access to information. Also, products for housework including
washing machines and vacuum cleaners reduces burdens on housewives. With these
devices which makes people’s life increases the amount of contentment brought
to people. This view is supported by a survey carried out by the Seoul
University on 217 different families. The survey showed a strong correlation
between the number of modern gadgets they possess and the overall happiness.
This results clearly indicates that higher number of possessions lead to more
happiness.
To sum up, more
possessions mean higher self-esteem and convenience. As these increases the
amount of happiness, I strongly believe that more possessions lead to more
happiness.
