We are clearly living in the world with superfluous advertisements.
Sometimes, we are totally overtaken by the excessive amount of advertisements.
As a result, we often lose our insights and abilities to make clear decisions.
It is suggested that young children are more vulnerable to the influence of advertisements
than adults. Therefore, I think advertisements directed toward young children
should not be allowed for the two main reasons.
First of all, young
children need a cornerstone to develop their ability of systematic thinking.
The young children are in the process of developing a mature mind and their own
perspectives. However, most of TV advertisements contain biased and one-sided
information because advertisement creators only consider interests of the
company that commissioned them. For example, in advertisements of video games companies only accentuate the bright side of their game such as how fun it is or how children can play the game with their friends. But, there is also a dark side of the game that companies never told children such as the chances of being addicted to playing games. For this reason, if young children accept the
information included in advertisements indiscriminately, they will not be able
to have a proper base to develop their abilities I mentioned.
Secondly, young
children would be taken opportunity to foster their self-control. The primary
purpose of conducting advertisements is to make people buy the companies’
products. Therefore, companies tend to make their advertisements more enticing
thereby making people anxious to buy their products. In contrast to adults who
can make their own decision about what to buy, young children whose level of
self-control is relatively low are more likely to be induced by advertisements.
From my experience, I have two cousins younger than five years old, they often
lose their temper and mind when they watch toy advertisements on TV. In this
sense, it is seemed that advertisements hinder young children from improving
their self-control.
In sum, advertisements
directed toward young children should not be allowed because young children are
not ready to accept the information from advertisements and they need enough
time to develop their self-control. |
