▶ Your Answer :
There is ample support for the author’s claim that there are several plausible explanations that Robert E. Peary actually have reached the North Pole. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s point.
First, the professor contends that the investigation of the National Geographic Society’s committee was not objective. Most of the members of the committee were Peary’s close friends, and they also invested a lot of money in Peary’s expedition. In addition, the investigation was conducted for two days only. Having these facts in mind, the result is not trustworthy. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that the committee of the National Geographic Society proved the truth by conducting an investigation of Peary’s records and equipment. Next, the professor insists that the expedition of Tom Avery was different from that of Peary. Tom used a sled which has less weight than Peary’s one because he transported the food by airplane. Furthermore, the weather condition was more favorable when Tom traveled the trek. This counters the reading passage’s assertion that recent expedition which was traveled by a British explorer named Tom Avery supports the credibility of Peary’s trip by passing the same route and using the same equipment. Finally, the professor argues that the photograph taken by Peary cannot prove anything. the sun’s exact position cannot be judged by the photograph. This is because it was taken by using a primary camera more than one hundred years ago. Also, because of the long time period, it was faded, worn, and blurred over time. Therefore, the accuracy of the sun’s position was implausible. This refutes the reading passage’s suggestion that the photographs taken by Peary tell the truth because of the correspondence of the surf’s position when measured using a shadow in the photograph. |
