Giving homework to the students could be a controversial matter.
Some people think teachers should give students homework every day while others
don’t. I believe both sides have their own reasons to support their views. If I
were asked to choose one, I would say that giving students homework on a daily basis is more beneficial than not giving
them homework. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with, when students are given homework and asked to finish
homework everyday it will help them to cultivate important qualities needed for
success. Finishing homework on time requires students to be diligent,
passionate and self-disciplined. When these personal traits are developed it is
likely to bring a better result in their lives. According to a study conducted
by a Seoul National University, a huge difference was found in academic
performance between two groups of students. One group consisted of elementray students of elementary school who
were given a certain amount of homework each day
and the other group was made up of students who don’t did not receive any homework. The researchers have
found that the former group of students were more likely to have a higher score
in the midterm and the final exam. To be specific, the first group showed a
longer attention span, stronger passion in their tasks and a better ability to
delay gratification. On the other hand, the second group tended to get
distracted easily, procrastinate, and act on impulse. This indicates that
giving students homework is the key to success.
Second, doing homework allows students to improve their sense of
responsibility. Finishing homework requires many obligations such as time
management and patience. When such obligations are fulfilled, they are likely
to realize that it brings about a good result.
For example, my younger brother used to be lazy and selfish. He has changed
little by little after he started to do his homework on time. He realized that him
his punctuality could help him achieve better
grades and help him
socialize others. Eventually he became more
prompt with time and played his part better than before. Without this
experience he would still have been irresponsible.
To sum up, I believe
students should be assigned homework everyday as it helps students to develop
good qualities needed for success such as time management and being diligent.
All in all, giving students homework on a daily
basis should not be overlooked.
