▶ Your Answer :
Acoording to the reading
passage, genetically modified (GM) crops are advantageous because they solve
the problem of world hunger, reduce the price of food, and produces much more
vaccines. The lecturer opposes the reading passage’s claim by giving three other
reasons.
First, the lecturer argues
that GM crops do not solve the problem of world hunger. Before GM crops
existed, food were produced enough to feed all the people in the world. However,
the reason why more than a billion people do not eat enough food is that
produced food is not equally distributed. Therefore, the existence of GM crops
would be also inequally distributed. This contradicts the reading passage’s claim that GM crops lower
the hunger rate.
Second, the lecturer asserts
that the price of food is actually increased by GM crops. To be more specific,
agricultural company that produces GM crops would try to make profit by
increasing the price. Moreover, GM crops need more water to grow, which means
the price of GM crops would be expensive. This contradicts the reading passage’s claim that GM crops lowers
the price of food.
Lastly, the lecturer points
out that the vaccines made of GM crops cannot also be delivered to poor region.
Vaccines with GM crops is made of bananas and tomatoes which is easy to spoil
in warm weather. It should be cold enough not to spoil it, and this makes it
hard to store and ship. This counters the reading passage’s claim that vaccines
produced by GM crops would be more widely available.
