The reading passage provides several evidences that the
Everglades has been faced serious dangers which threats the future existence of
the ecosystem. However, the professor in the lecture refutes the authors claim
and points out the hope of the recovery in the place.
First of all, the professor argues that the usage of chemical
substance having been declined due to the success of governmental regulations.
To be specific, government implements the law which bans the use of harmful chemical
substances, such as fertilizers. This turns out to be quite effective enough to
decline the rate of pollution had been generated in the area. This counters the
author’s assertion that nearby agricultural materials give huge negative influences
on the water source.
Second, the professor mentions that loss of soil is already
on the tract of remedy. This is mainly accountable for the people who have devoted
on the environment. They had success in recovering the ecosystem, and finally,
it would expect to be recovered. The positive changes occur much faster than
before. This casts doubts on the author’s claim that the drainage of the soil is
hopeless to be reconstructed, and causing permanent erosions and making unstable
grounds for the plants which live in the area.
Finally, according to the lecture, wildlife is more likely
to be increased again. As people purchased part of properties in the area in
order to settle the shelter for wild animals: marsh land, they might have
enough space for survive and reproduce their species. This rebuts the author’s
idea that reduced rate of wildlife is critical in the reservation of the
Everglades, expecting the complete disappearance of certain species.
