Although the author of the reading
passage argues that Phoenician could not make a voyage to Africa, the lecturer brings
up several points to contradict this argument.
First of all, the speaker contends
that the fact that Phoenician travels to Africa with their ships is true. An
experiment simulated the travelling with ships having have the same design and
materials with the one that Phoenician used. Although, the ships had been damaged,
they finally were able to visit the all places Phoenician arrived at. This
contradicts the passage’s argument that the Phoenician ship was too unsophisticated
to survive in inclement condition.
Secondly, the professor maintains that
there were convincing reasons why Phoenicians travelled through the sea. The
main reason is that construction of canal was not finished until Phoenicia
conquered other regions. Additionally, the canal was located in easily accessible
area to enemy, so another way to travel by ship was needed. This goes against
the writer’s view that there was no practical purpose for Phoenicians to circumnavigate
Africa.
The final point made by the lecturer
is that the claim related to myth has some limitations. There are Phoenician
records that only could only be written by people who physically visited Southern
area. It was difficult to make up the record for Phoenicians who only had lived
in Northern area. This refutes the reading passage’s assertion that Phoenician
faked the story about their navigation for their fame as sailors.
