The reading
passage contends that the it is doubtful that Amazon had built a big and developed civilization
and this statement can be fully explained by three theories. On the other hand,
the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument.
First of all,
the speaker argues that dense jungle did not deter the Amazon from forming a
large civilization. This is because of considering satellite images recently discovered.
What I learned is that The images indicate that many of the people in a number of towns worked together
albeit the high concentration of plants. This casts doubt on the reading
passage’s claim that the Amazon rain forest verifies the failure of building a
civilization.
Second, according
to the lecturer, the reading's argument on less sophisticated tools of the Amazon are is unreliable.
This is supported by the fact that a myriad of potteries were was found and there
were beautiful ceramic vessels in an island around the Amazon. It should be
noted that these can be made only in highly civilized cultures. This counters
the reading passage’s assertion that the lower level of toolmaking implies that
the Amazon was uncivilized.
The final point
made by the lecturer is that it does not necessarily mean is unlikely that the failure of discovering an
advanced civilization in the Amazon, explored by the European people, indicates
that there was no large civilization. The reason is that the area of the Amazon
is large and vast, and thus European explorers they were not able to expedite all the cities in
the region, like the case of Cambodia. This refutes the reading passage’s
argument that only small sized communities existed in the Amazon area.
