▶ Your Answer :
There are two kinds of people in the university. Some people believe that it is better to have broad knowledge in many field, on the contrary, others think studying one specific subject is better. For my perspective, I assert that people should study one certain subject instead study a various subjects. This is because the specialists of specific subject will be competitive now and in the future, and there are too many academic subjects to study these days.
First and foremost, the specialists or experts take a lot of advantages in many aspects. As the technology has developed, the internet provide broad knowledge to people. So some shallow knowledge are available to everyone and it is easy to look up. But, the experts are different because they can make the most use of knowledge to optimize some projects. So they are competitive and useful in many situation. For instance, I have a friend whose name is Kim. He is a smart guy and have diverse knowledge so people call him "Jack-of-all-trades". He is a well-around person but he does not know which one is his best ability. He has changed his major in the university three times and now he is struggling with gaining a job. At work, employers wants to hire the professional Jack, not the Jack-of-all-trades.
On top of that, there are so many new academic subjects now. With the development of the science and engineering, a bunch of new subjects are being raised. Thus, knowing broad knowledge will be impossible in near future. For example, in the past, when it comes to the major in the university, people come up with the main subject such as the math or the literature. Now, new and unfamiliar majors are listed on the universities' department such as system engineering and needs analysis. Knowledge and the field of study are getting wide now and it would be much more in the future. As a result, it will be impossible to have broad knowledge soon.
To sum up, having diverse knowledge is disadvantage to get a job and it will be impossible in the future. In this regard, it is better to study and specialize a single specific subject. |
