Reference to the lecture, Prairie dogs do not harm the land in fact. The hole that they dig actually prevents the soil erosion. Due to the hole, the soil become lose. Hence, when there is heavy rain, it allows water to penetrate easily through the hole.
Furthermore, it is not Prairie dogs that actually transmit the severe diseases. Other species such as rat is the main transmitter of the diseases. Moreover, Prairie dogs have a characteristic that avoids people. Hence, there will be no actual physical contact with human-beings, so there is less chance of them getting bitten by Prairie dogs.
Prairie dogs do not have negative effects on the food supply for livestock, it rather enrich the nutritional value of the plants. According to the ranchers, Prairie dogs allow the plants to grow with new shoots and leaves. this will not result ranchers to purchase food to meet the nutritional needs of their livestock, unlike what is stated in the passage. |
