▶ Your Answer : There might be some people who believe that it is better to impose higher taxes and large fines on the companies who harm the environment, while others disagree with the above statement. Both camps have their own reasons to support their perspectives. If I had to choose one, I would say that the government have to take an action such as increasing taxes and huge amount of fines. There are several reasons and examples as follows.
To begin with, the penalties like taxes and fines enable the companies to develop more sustainable products. In general, the profit the companies make is most valuable thing when they operate the companies. When they produce more sustainable products which is not harmful in our environment, even if the cost could increase, overall cost would be reduced in long term, indicating that the profit could be guaranteed. For example, I read articles about the environment issues in South Korea a few months ago. Starbucks, most famous coffee company in the world announced that they will not provides plastic straws anymore in South Korea. Instead of that, they provided the paper straws for customers. This was because the government of South Korea started to impose some restrictions for companies which overuse plastic products. After this actions, Starbucks coffee Korea decided to reduce the plastic items they used to offer and develop new sustainable items. By doing this service, the cost increased in some months, but they reported they got more customers and better market value.
On top of that, imposing higher tariff on the companies helps people to know which companies are trying protect the environment. To be specific, we can recognize some companies when they should pay for higher taxes or large fines. This is because major broadcasts would announced the companies. As a result, many people do not want to consume the products the companies produce. For instance, according to the recent survey conducted by the national statistics reported that eighty percent of the respondents have been reluctant to buy the items by companies got penalty due to damaging our ecology. On the contrary, they have responded they are willing to purchase sustainable goods. This survey demonstrates how the tariff could be effective on preventing companies from destroying the environment.
In sum up, I strongly believe that the government should restrict the companies which are doing some bad effects on our environment by forcing strong action such as tariff and fine given that its advantages far weight its disadvantages. In this regard, the importance of my view cannot be underestimated fro the reasons I have mentioned above.
