▶ Your Answer :
The
reading passage and the lecture are both about genetically modified crops.
Whereas the author of the reading states that genetically modified crops have
the advantages, the lecturer casts doubts on the author’s opinions for three
reasons.
First of
all, according to the reading, one advantage of genetically modified crops is
that it can be a solution of the problem of world hunger. Because the technology
to genetically modify the crops is able to increase crop yields, it helps to
cultivate enough food for poor people. On the other hand, the lecturer points
out that the main reason of world hunger is closely related with the matter of
distribution of crops, not the absolute amount of crops. There is already enough
food in the world, but the problem is the food is not accordingly distributed
to poor people.
Secondly,
the author mentions that genetically modified crops reduce the price of food,
because they are strong enough to endure the harsh environment like freezing
temperature. However, the lecturer claims that genetic modification of the crops
increases the price of food. For example, genetically modified seeds are 5
times expensive compared to the normal seeds, and the modified crops also need
more water for growth.
Lastly,
the lecturer contends that genetically modified crops do not support the
production of vaccines. Though the author says that those crops are more
resistant to the temperature than conventional vaccines, which makes them easy
to be stored and transported, the lecturer argues that genetically modified crops
for vaccines like tomato or banana are also spoiled easily.
In
conclusion, the lecturer challenges the reading passage effectively by giving
appropriate reasons against the author’s opinions
