▶ Your Answer :
In the reading
passage, there is ample support for the author's claim that adding more tax on
tobacco has several advantages. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up some
points that contradict this argument.
First, the professor insists that raising a
tax on cigarettes makes youth to get their tobacco more
in the black market. Even though the cigarettes prices rise, they can buy it
cheaper and easier way from there. This is proved by a recent study. This casts
doubt on the reading passage's assertion that the younger cannot afford the
higher price of cigarettes and will stop smoking.
Next, the professor contends that the
government will not earn taxes enough to invest
their environment. They cannot make additional benefit from it, because a
higher tax leads to decrease the tobacco sale.
This counters the reading passage's claim that the government can improve the
environmental harm caused by tobacco farms to use their supplementary tax.
Finally, the professor argues that tobacco
business creates a lot of jobs. There were various jobs related cigarettes such as agricultural,
manufactural, and retailer works. Thus,
decreasing tobacco consumption that caused its higher price makes less occupations and more poverty. This refutes the
reading passage's suggestion that extra revenue
can be used to reduce poverty.
