Some people think that important decisions should be made alone. However, making decisions with others are better than making without others, especially when it comes to important decisions.
To begin with, important decisions should be made with others because one may only look at the issue at one perspective. People do not realize that there are other aspects of the decisions. Once a person is confined to one side of the perspective, it is hard to get away from it. Thus, the best way to get out of this is discussing with others. While discussing, he or she may realize other possible circumstances of the decision. For instance, my friend Mary had a boyfriend named Luke. They loved each other so much that they decided to get married. However, Mary was somewhat hesitant about getting married with Luke since getting married is one of the most important decisions in one's life and Mary was not sure if Luke was the best husband she could meet. She came to me and asked how her boyfriend was. Before meeting him, Mary told me a lot of things about Luke. Since Mary loved Luke so much, she only said positive aspects of Luke. With great anticipation, I met Luke. But he was not that great as I expected. Mary's love covered all the negative aspects of Luke. So I told her some of the negative aspects of him smoothly. After hearing my comments, Mary was so surprised at how she saw Luke only one-sided. If she has not discussed with me before, she would have lived with a man with some problems that could have made her uncomfortable.
On top of this, one may not have as much experiences as others. Decisions like choosing a major is very crucial in one's life since the major determines one's job. Thus, one should listen to other people's advices based on their experiences. For example, when my brother Mark had to choose his major, he received a big help from my cousin Susan. What Mark was considering for his major was between computer science and biology. When he asked Susan what major would give him better job in the future, Susan recommended computer science. Based on her personal experience, she majored in biology and now she is looking for a job that requires knowledge about biology. Unfortunately, there are not much jobs she can have other than biology teacher or biology researcher. However, she said that her friend who majored in computer science have more choices since the importance of computer has increased. So Mark majored in computer science and he is very satisfied with the choice.
Due to the advices and different point of view of other people, important decisions such as choosing spouse or deciding a major should never be made without others. |
