Today, growing number of students have interests in political and
social issues in society. Thus, it is under debate whether teachers are allowed
to let their students know their political or social views. However, I do not
agree with this statement. I am in total disagreement because of two compelling
reasons: First is that unfavorable emotion toward the teacher can affect the
students in the class and second reason is that the teachers’ opinion can be seeped(주입되다) to the students unintentionally.
The
first reason that supports my argument is that if teachers have their students
know their typical opinion toward social issues, students will compare their
own opinions and react subjectively. It is undeniable that all people
can not have same views toward social or political issues and sometimes people
get into a fight because of this. However, there are some places that these
opinions should not be exposed to others, such as schools. For instance, my
friend in high school had a very strong opinion about a typical social issue at
that time. Unfortunately, she had known that our history teacher had also
strong opinion different to hers because she heard teachers talking about this
in the school cafeteria. From that time on, my friend did not have good
feelings about that teacher and did not concentrate in the class which led her
to have low scores in that class. As illustrative in this case, it handicaps
some students if they know what their teachers think about typical social or
political issues.
The
second reason I disagree with the support that teachers can have their opinion
known to the students is that students can take this with any doubt. Even
though teachers do not reveal their opinions directly, their opinions can be
indirectly exposed when they teach their students. This can be fragile hazardous
to young students because they do not have ability to distinguish opinions from
facts. According to the survey done by the Education Ministry, over 70% of
the elementary students said they believe the things teachers teach in class
are mostly true. It shows that these students accept what teachers say in class
without much doubt. As it is demonstrative in this research, letting students
know typical view about political or social issues can be very harmful to
students.
In sum, it is not beneficial for both the
teachers and students to know what kind of political or social views the
teachers have. It is because students can be affected by their feeling toward
the teachers but also that sometimes the teachers’ opinion can be seeped to the
students indirectly. |
