Nowadays, people all around the world can readily watch movies and television ever before, so it is highly debatable whether the medium of movies and television strongly affect the way people behave. In general, the consensus view seems to be that the visual medium is not related to people’s actions and thoughts. In my opinion, however, I firmly believe that people are seriously affected by movies and television for the following two subsequent reasons.
First and foremost, modern people, in particular children, are susceptible to such medium because movies and television instill too much stimulus into our brains. In fact, children’s brains are not mature yet, and children are too young to filter visual effects. Therefore, many adolescents tend to emulate their movie stars and have fantasy fictions. For example, when I was an elementary school student, I had a friend, Jason. I was very depressed because of him. To be specific, he loved the movie “Superman”, so he wanted to fly like Superman. One day, he went to the rooftop of our school, and he thought that he could fly in the sky. However, he fell in the ground and passed away. Had he were not exposed to such a movie, he would not make a wrong decision. Through this experience, our school forced us to regulate excessive fiction and fantasy movies.
In addition, television and movies affect the consuming habits of adults since they have a lot of exciting advertisements. Specifically, many consumers are encouraged to purchase a wide array of items by televisions or their favorite actors. Although they do not need something immediately, they tend to buy something that their favorite celebrities wear on impulse. This is a potent stimulus and motivation. For instance, there is a poll conducted by the Johns Hopkins University with their 400 students majoring in social economic philosophy. The purpose of the survey is to understand the risks of advertisements on television. The majority of them responded that modern people are exposed by a lot of advertisements on television, which means that its influence can change their consuming habits negatively. An overwhelming 92 percent argued that the current government should regulate their television and broadcastings due to their stimulating images.
In conclusion, taking their risks of fiction and negative consuming habits into consideration, I strongly believe that movies and television definitely affect the way they behave. Never should we forget that this issue may have a huge impact on our future.
