There may be pros and cons regarding the argument that grades encourage students to learn. I am in complete agreement with this argument. In this papar, I elaborate on the two strong reasons for my position.
First of all, grades make students to learn because grades play a critical role in developing student’s untapped talents. Modern-day students lives in hectic lives, because today’s globalized society increasingly competitive and constantly changing. Consequently, it is necessary for them to develop their talents and tap into their full potential for effective studying. This makes it crucial for grading system to help students develop their potentials in order to get good grades. In this context, grades makes students to learn more things. According to a group of education experts at Columbia University, people who are evaluated with grades, spend twice as much time on their study as those who are not. / people who are evaluated with grades, spend a doubled time on their study more than those who are not. The majority of surveyed education experts argued that students are likely to become unproductive, if they do not receive grades, especially when they study in class.
Moreover, my strong support for grades can be rationalized. This is attributed to the fact that when students struggle to get grades, they could even learn lessons on morality and ethics. Some students who are still mentally immature have a long way to go before they become grown-ups. During this long journey, they tend to make many mistakes and therefore are prone to misbehave. However, they can be regulated by grades, which require them to observe etiquette and social norms, and can thus be good models for society. In this context, the value of grades cannot be overlooked. For example, some students may give in to the temptation of using drugs at school because they are too young to judge right from wrong. This is exactly why a grading system is an urgent need. Under the grading system, students can avoid such temptations and become law-abiding citizens, because they do not want to get lower grades. Through such systems, they can become holistic beings.
Because of the reasons explained above, I strongly maintain that grading students should not be overlooked within the unique context of today’s society. |
