There have been many studies about the effective ways to make students
interested in studying. Some people argue that assigning homework to students
every day is the best way to attract their interest in studying. However, I
disagree with this statement in that the stress which students may receive from
their homework can decrease their interest in studying and impede them from
developing their own study
habit
First of all, giving students homework every day may cause too much
stress to students, leading them to lose their interest in studying. In middle
schools or high schools, students usually spend almost seven to eight hours a
day in school studying a lot of subjects. Since they already receive enough
stress from their school, it is quite necessary for students to take their
after-school time to ease their minds. However, if teachers give students
homework every day, students will have no time to reduce their stress from days
at school, and the obligation to do
homework may put even more stress on
them. Moreover, students are likely to resort
to petty tricks such as copying their peer’s homework in order to escape
from their stress and worry about the punishment.
Second, students can have trouble in developing their own study
habits when they receive homework every day from their school. To elaborate, when
teachers assign students homework every day, students may spend most of their
study time in doing homework. This will deprive
children of opportunities to study voluntarily, making their personalities more passive. Whereas
these passive students, who have never planned their own study plans, usually
have difficulties in studying all alone when there is no one to assign tasks,
active students spend their time more efficiently in studying alone, because
they know well about what they are lacking and what they are really supposed to
do. Thus, passive students are likely to fall
behind active students in the competition.
In conclusion, teachers are strongly advised not to assign homework to
students on a daily basis so that students can experience less stress and take
opportunities to develop their voluntary study habits. By doing so, we can help
students to become successful and independent adults in the future. |
