▶ Your Answer : The reading passage talks about the environmental factors causing the Everglades to be deteriorated. However, the lecturer contends that there is still hope to anticipate that the wetlands in the Everglades can be remedied in the near future with a few reasons. The first factor is that water in the wetlands is constantly being contaminated by the nearby agricultural facilities such as farms growing sugarcanes. It says they are known to use fertilizers that contain lots of hazardous chemical elements that can destroy the ecosystem and pollute water. However, the lecturer asserts the water-polluting problem can be remedied because there is a new regulation in that area that limits the amount of disposals and uses of those fertilizers containing dangerous substances.
The second factor is a soil loss, meaning the soil is being lost because of the US government draining a bunch of soil and exposing the rich ones on the surface which eventually dries up lots of soil, annihilating the wetlands’ ecosystem. The lecturer argues about this factor that there has been a process to remedy this problem. It is the efforts of restoration of wetlands by the local residents, which has recently been accelerated, potentially going to show some promising effects in the near future. The third factor is the process of human development. It says that because of people building houses and farms in those areas, many animals and plants lose their homes such as Florida Panthers. In response to this factor, the lecturer says the government of Florida recently bought some properties to turn the sugarcane farms into wild marshlands, which can provide homes to many different species of plants and animals, solving the problem. |
