There are certain considerations everyone takes into account when judging a neighbor. People may see loyalty, altruism and understanding in their neighbor. I agree with these people; a good neighbor should be trustworthy, selfless and comprehensive.
Above all, an ideal neighbor should be loyal to you. Once, I happened to live near a talkative neighbor, who couldn’t keep any secrets. At first, unaware of this, I would chat for hours with her. Only later, did I find that everybody else in the town knew about my secrets. I would have preferred it if she’d kept my stories private. Likewise, a neighbor who gossips excessively is not a good neighbor. A desirable neighbor is someone you can “spill the beans” to, without having to worry about those secrets leaking out. You should be able to trust a good neighbor.
Second, a fine neighbor should be selfless. Of course, this doesn’t mean that s/he should always sacrifice him/herself for other neighbors. In order to form a friendly neighborhood, each neighbor should simply “try not to be egotistic”. Especially, there are terraced houses and apartments where you should respect your neighbors. For instance, hosting a disco party at your house at midnight would be selfish because you are disturbing others just to have your fun. A good neighbor would never ignore the presence of other neighbors just to satisfy his/her own needs.
Third, a kind neighbor must be understanding. Things aren’t perfect in any community, including the neighborhood. There may be other neighbors who are always noisy, for instance. They may 'get on your nerves'. However, a good neighbor would never scream malignantly or tell those people off impatiently. S/he would first try to be in that neighbor’s shoes. Perhaps, that household has a baby, which makes it more difficult to keep silent. It is important to have a harmonious neighborhood, and in order to achieve this, a good neighbor would understand other neighbors’ situations.
In conclusion, the three qualities that best qualify a good neighbor are: loyalty, unselfishness and tolerance. If you have a neighbor who is loyal, unselfish and understanding, there is no reason why s/he isn’t the best neighbor you could have.
