"Runway" is one of the most famous fashion programs which is about fashoin desginers in the U.S or Korea. I believe this reflects changed attitude of people toward clothes or appearance. Since they have enough free time and money to devote for themselves, they started to desire to be more attractive. However, people are putting too much emphasis on appearance and clothes. They use too much money on fashions and images and evaluate people based on their looks.
People are spending a great amount of money to keep up with current fashion trends or for beauty. When people could improve their looks, they do anything no matter how much expensive it is such as purchasing clothes, cosmetics and in an extreme case, plastic surgery. If they could be beautiful and attractive, they could risk their properties, families, friends and even their own life. For example, Koreans were shocked by a plastic surgery addiction. This term is for people who repeatedly have the surgery. They are not satisfied on their appearance, thus they conduct the surgery to be more beautiful. Then the cycle begins, people kept doing the surgery until the satisfaction. However, the more they do, the more depressed they are. They loose their friends, families, money and their self-confidence or their precious life, but the cycle never ends. If I take this example into account, it is definitely true that people are putting too much weight on appearance and clothes.
Moreover, people tend to judge others based on their images. People in today have one stereotype: people who are attractive are more capable, knowledgeable and kind. Hence, many people believe success comes from good-looking and this is quite true. For example, in Korea, there were a lot of companies which were criticized from many people. It was because of unfair evaluations of potential candidates. Even though most of people had same capacities such as similar TOEIC scores, people who were more attractive, handsome and beautiful were hired. That kind of situation leads people have good-looking. As matter of fact, people are forgetting about internal values of people and emphasizing on external characteristics.
In conclusion, I believe people are paying too much attention on their looks since they are spending too much money for it and their tendency to judge others' value by their appearance. People should realize that love, friendship, courtesy and other humanitarian values are much more important. |
