Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss online survey research. However, the lecture cast doubt on the reading passage's idea that online survey research is advantageous.
To begin with, the lecture contradicts the fact in the passage that online survey research allows researchers to get access to a large and concentrated group of people who share similiar interest in an issue by arguing that there are problems in the samples of the survey. This is because people online don't always provide true information of themselves, therefore making researchers not be able to know the real features of the people online.
On the top of that, contrary to the belief in the passage that online survey research can greatly reduce researcher's time because he or she can do other tasks and research for the survey at the same time, the lecturer claims that it actually takes more time to survey online. Her main reason lies on the fact that not all internet users who recieve the invitation to participate in the survey are willing to be the actual participants. Many of them simply ignore the invitation.
Furthermore, the lecturer denies the reading passage's argument that online survey research can also save researcher's money by eliminating the need of extra expenses such as printing that are spent when using the traditional researching method. This is because in order to higher the low participation in the survey, researchers often have to either offer payments by giving out prizes randomly or provide incentives such as free coupons to all the participants.
For these reasons, the lecturer claims that the demerits outweigh the merits of online research survey.
