Both reading and listening passages cover a psychological approach when it comes to the development of one's personality. The listening passage challenges the information in the reading passage by giving another kind of approach a lot different from the one given in the reading.
In the reading passage, the writer explains about an approch called "the conflict approach", which is about how the human personality forms. The conflict approach basically means that a life is full of a great number of conflicts and human is expected to form their own personality through such conflicts. There are two kinds of conflicts:intrinsic and extrinsic. In other words, human goes through continuous state of conflict whether from inside or outside themselves, which eventually forms their own personality.
The lecturer's statement in the listening passage counters the reading passage, however. He points out that the conflict approach which the reading passage focuses on is not the only model in regards to the development of one's personality: there are a variety of theories. It is the fulfillment approach which the professor covers in the lecture. It is notable that the two theories are quite different from each other in that the latter one contradicts the former one by asserting life is not full of conflicts. It is based on the idea that life goes only by single force of reaching goals. One must desire to achieve their own goals and his or her personality forms by how well their life match the invision they desire.
To summarize, the lecturer challenges the reading passage by highlighting that the conlfict approach explained by writer is not the only one: there exist lots of theories instead. Among them, the professor especially make focus on the fulfillment approach which is completely contradictory against the conflict one.
