Nowadays, general awareness about whether grades encourage students to learn or not.
People, nevertheless, have conflicting ideas; while some people say that marks make young people more hard to study, others argue that it is not necessary to stimulate students to study by grades. Personally, I believe that it is not a good stimulator for students for the following reasons.
First of all, estimating students through only grades brings about enormous stress.
Let me take my experience as an example. After my first year of high school, I started losing my grip on math and confidence to succeed in the subject. Although my parents tried to encourage me, their efforts did not help at all. Not only my grades were decreasing, but also I was becoming a negative student. Then, it was a news that the grades regulation would be disappeared. When I was listened the surprising news, I was very pleased and charged. The news offered me an effective stimulator, I could took courage. As a result, my grades greatly improved in the next semester.
Moreover, it makes too much competitions among the students.
A recent television documentary program by Korean National Education Research covered how grading system can act as a competition-maker. The program pointed that most students study for winning first prize in periodical exam or term paper. To be more specific, it suggested that approximately 94 percent of middle school students have a purpose to beat other students. In this regard, the grading system makes students too competitive and negative persons.
In conclusion, due to the fact that marks have a lot of bad effects for students, students should be evaluated by other method. This is because grading system could perform as a stress producer, and the excessive competition would be likely to be appeared. |
