TOPIC - Venus Habitation
The lecturer argues that human habitation of Venus is a possible matter to consider and talks about several solutions to overcome obstacles to habitation. These solutions are very practical and they are against the reading passage’s claim that it is impossible to live on Venus because of hostile environment.
First, the lecturer claims that people could live in the structures placed up in the air. She explains that Venus’ atmosphere at 50km above the surface has similar air pressure as the Earth does. This would solve the problem of great air pressure discussed in the passage.
In addition, the lecturer presents the idea that people can produce oxygen and water using the chemistry of Venus. She says that even though there’s no oxygen and water, we can create them through chemical reactions and electrical sparks. This would overcome the problem of the lack of water and oxygen from the passage.
The lecturer at last says that we can get heat energy from the surface and solar energy from up in the atmosphere. Besides, since Venus rotates very slowly, people can put the solar panels on the sunny side of Venus, and the panels would be able to absorb solar energy almost indefinitely. This rebuffs the passage’s assumption that people can’t get energy on Venus.
