Many people tend to avoid being a leader in a group since a leader usually has to do more works and to be more responsible of the result. Admittedly, leaders get more stress and sometimes should sacrifice themselves. However, in my point of view, being a leader is a valuable experience because a leader can feel a great sense of accomplishment and develop a lot of important social skills.
First of all, a leader contributes more than other members, so he or she deserves to be more proud of the result. Of cause, every member has his or her own role and works for the team, but, undoubtedly, a leader does much more important tasks: distributing duties, checking the process, organizing every detail and so on. To demonstrate, when I was a college student, I had a role of a director in a school festival. This role required me to deal with so many things, that I felt seriously burdened. Even though it made me exhausted, I did not resign from it and worked hard to make a wonderful festival. Finally, the festival finished successfully. Many students said that they were satisfied with programs of the festival and thanked me a lot. Especially, members who worked with me to prepare the festival presented me a clock, as a gift of gratitude. I cannot forget the great happiness and fulfillment.
Moreover, a leader can have a valuable lesson, while leading other members. A leader has to not only control other members, but also listen to their ideas carefully. In addition, he or she sometimes has to reconcile or persuade them when a conflict occurred. Hence, a leader can naturally learn many important social skills such as persuasion or initiative. According to the Chosun, the biggest newspaper company in Korea, most recruiters consider those social skills the most important criterion to choose jobseekers. They prefer applicants who experienced a leader, because they believe that those applicants can cope with challenging tasks much better that others.
In conclusion, a role of a leader is worth to experience. Because a leader can feel a strong sense of accomplishment and develop important social skills. Therefore, I always recommend that a young man take the chance to be a leader. |
