all able-bodied Korean men above the age of 18 are obliged to serve in the military for about two years. but all korean men are trying to avoid to go to army.
we have to endure mental, physical anguish and different life style and thinking from society for 2years.
as i am well able-bodied man, of course i did my duty of my national defense.
the reminiscence of army life is occupy a lot in my life.
but i used to don't like to have talk or remember about my life in army.
even though i have some good memories, i lost many thing for two years when i was in a army.
2006 august, after graduate the highschool, i decided to go to the army. it wasn't easy decision to me to go to army in young age.
everynight was nightmare to me. it was not physical training, yearning, controlled life that come to me. it was my lifee before i joined the military that came to me the most painfully.
why haven't i done things that i wanted to do? why haven't i done things that shold have done? why haven't i said things that i wanted to say? those are what i regret most.
i regret with thinking things could have changed if i wasn't lazy, if i and just do. especially, i regret more when i heard a younger man had more experienced and tried more than me.
it already passed a year so soon with regret everyday.
kim saw my worried face and he asked me "do you have something on your mind?"
i answered that "i regret to came to the army and i wonder if i can endure 1 more year.
and then he asked to me strange question
"how many years you gona live more?
i said "probably will live at least 80 years.
he answered "in your 80 years life, two years is very short time. you are now in the train called the life and it take 80 years to get to the destination. now your train just stopped by way station to get a rest and its called army.
way station isn't place where regret that you have lived.
after you passed the way station and finally arrive at destination.
you will see what is in the bag of life. inside bag, i hope u see the precious time in army ,too
at that moment, i lost what i had to say i was shocked and felt like hit my head by hammer.
