What is one thing that multinational companies should understand about your culture?
라는 주제에 대해 짧은 essay를 쓰고 있습니다.
one thing에는 languge, customs등등이 있는데 그중 custom을 골랐구요.
One thing that multinational companies doing business in the Republic of Korea should understand is the special relationship custom between each others. Regarding the familiar relationships called ‘정’ as important, Koreans share and give each others somethings like kimchi for free. So, foreigners visiting cosmetic stores in Korea are sometimes amazed of the enormous amount of gifts called ‘덤’ even more than amount they bought. Likewise, anyone can refill side dishes in Korean restaurants for free.
Whatever multinational companies sell, they'll get poor appraisal unless they ignore it. In 2004, a international cosmetic company 'Benefit' started to sell their products, but without any ‘덤’, they failed to extend their business. They thought 'The more they give, the more expensive the products are'. Even though the principle fits the concept of economy, Korean customers didn't like the concept and felt disappointment when they didn't get any free gifts. Due to the cold respond of customers, the company changed their concept and started to provide free gifts eventually.
As you know, multinational companies in other countries do provide gifts, too - like free toys in McDonald´s. But the customers in the countries complain about unreasonable pricing.
