ACTUAL TEST 07 INDEPENDENT
TOPIC
Universities and high schools should teach students about specific careers and fields instead of general subjects.
Universities and high schools throughout the world teach students general subjects such as literature and algebra. However, students don’t usually get to use the skills or what they learned in the real society after they graduate and when they are trying to get occupations. And those schools should rather teach students the details of many different jobs and fields. This is because it is not very practical to learn these general subjects, and also because most of the students have ambitions to be famous or to achieve their goals.
To begin with, learning general subjects like algebra, history, or science can’t be very practical unless the student’s major is significantly related to one of these subjects, or the student’s interest lays on it. Even though it is true that the students need basic knowledge about the subjects, it is not that they’ll have to memorize what’s on the book when they go to job interviews. If the student wants to be a teacher after (s)he graduates, it is essential for them to know lots of details of the subject (s)he wants to teach about. However, it’s not that all the students are going to be teachers, and some students just don’t need these subjects. Of course, schools should teach some fundamental facts related to the subjects, but they shouldn’t give students pressure about those subjects and they should more focus on teaching what kind of jobs there are in the world.
In addition, many students have desire to achieve their goals. And especially if they are not very sure about what kind of job they want to have after they graduate, they need more information about each job in the world. For example, a student might be good at both writing and talking, and (s)he could be wondering what (s)he should be: an orator, or a writer. If her/his school teaches many details about being an orator and being a writer, (s)he might make her mind up and be a great orator (or a writer). There can be many students like this, and they would more easily make their decisions about their future occupations.
To conclude, schools should let the students know what it is like to have a specific job. Who knows? Students nowadays might grow up as future heroes. They don’t need every small details of general topics, but what they need is what kind of people they are going to be when they grow up.
