Some people prefer using text message to speaking directly to others about upsetting or controversial problems. I, however, think that using telephone or voice message is more proper to communicate with others about controversial issues than using text. This is because text cannot contain the nuance. Moreover, it is time consuming and we cannot know whether the recipient get the mail right.
First of all, text cannot transfer the accurate meaning of the writer and it is hard for people to understand the subtle nuance without the speaker's voice. Also, if we deal with the upsetting issues, it is more important to convey the accurate subtle meaning very well because people are easy to misunderstand the text and be upsetted when they are confronted opposing opinion. For example, I sometimes have hard times interpreting the text message of my friends because I can't see their facial expressions and even their voices. Even though they said just jokes or meaningless something I misinterpret the nuance because the text cannot transfer the voice and intonation. Furthemore, it is common that people fight due to the trvial things because of their text words and reconcile with each other after they speak directly with their voice. Like this, using voice message is necessary to communicate with others, especially debating about controversail issues.
Moreover, using the text message is time-consuming and not convenient to deliver the message in a timely fashion. It cannot be said that text message is always useless because of the convenience. However, what is true is that on the controversial problems, we may miss the proper time for conversation and poorly concentrate on the issue because the intervals of the message distracts our thinking and the original intention. Moreover, we cannot confirm whether the message recipients recieved the mail well and he/she also send the reply. For example, I have read an article in the Korea Times about a survey of the 100 professors of the world wide famous Universities. On the survey, they were asked whether they enjoy the text mail or message when they debate about sensitive issues. Of those who answered, 75% said that they don't enjoy the writing becaus it is take a lot of time to correspond with other people about the issue and not convienent to send the message. As such, text message is not proper to debate about controversial problems.
In conclusion, I think speaking with our own voice is more effective to debate with others about sensitive problems. This is because by speaking directly, we can convey the subtle nuance in the words and send the message more efficiently and conveniently. |
