It is often said that current university students do not have enough knowledge about history. This is why some people argue that university students should be required to take history class in school. However, I do not agree with the previous statement for two reasons. First, students already have many things to do. Also, historical knowledge does not help students to get a job.
To begin with, students do not have to take history course during their school year because they already have many assignments and study to do. Unless there are majoring in history, students should be able to focus on what they are major in. If they feel overwhelmed by studying other fields, they will under stress. For example, whenever I take a test in school, I feel very burden to study elective courses which are not even related to my major. Once, I had to give up finishing my major study because of non-major subjects such as Contemporary-art or World-history. My friends and I always thought we may save more time if it was not for these subjects.
In addition, history course should not be mandatory to students because it does not provide much opportunity to get a job for students. It is obvious that students may forget everything they have learned and never use the historical knowledge practically after their graduation. It is a waste of time for them to take the course they will never going to use. To illustrate, my aunt had taken a Chinese history class when she was in college. It was obligation for her to take it since it was a school policy. However, after her graduation, she became a math teacher and never used it again. She now says that it was a waste of time for her to studying it for 4years.
To conclude, it is not a responsibility to university students to take history courses. This is because they already have many things to do during a school year. Also, because history knowledge is not practical, it does not help students to get a job after graduation. |
