An intriguing topic of discussion at hand is whether people learn
more by watching television than by reading books. The answer to this question
can vary greatly, depending on the individual perspectives. Thus, the jury may
still be out, but as far as I am concerned, I agree with the statement. In this
essay, I will present two reasons supporting my standpoint as follows.
First of all, people today are greatly affected by mass media. This
is attributed to the reason that contemporary people have no luxury of the time
to read book, in other words, they require themselves to know instant
information, so it is uneasy to procure a large amount of information in limited
span through reading books. According to a recent report by the National
Research Center of Korea, the average amounts of books undergraduates read a
year are 1.2 volumes. The reason why they don’t read books is
that it needs too much time to read a book thoroughly. Moreover, studies shown that students think
that learning a specific area by means of books is not efficient methods.
Students are able to find a myriad of information through program in television
such as news which contain a wide range of information. In this sense, it is
evident that watching television is more beneficial way to learn.
On top of that, most books don’t contain up-to-date information
people need. The underlying cause lies in the fact that it costs a lot to
reprint new version of books. Take my high school years as illustration. When I
took a sociology class, teacher gave me an assignment about the gender wage gap
in Korea society. At that time, I had no enough time to complete my project
perfectly, for finishing this, I visited Book-gu library which placed in near
my house. However, the books regarding gender wage gap dealt with old figures,
as a result, I couldn’t complete my project. It did not help me to write my
report. It followed that I had to go back my house. If I had not go library, as
much as I did, I would have a chance to finish my report more efficiently.
In conclusion, I strongly argue for my standpoint on account of the
two reasons mentioned above. Once again, although the verdict may still be out,
I personally believe that two of my rationales above are sufficiently
convincing enough to represent the viewpoints of a majority of people who are
in faver of my claim. |
