Whenever the controversy on whether immigrants should follow the custom of the new country or keep their own culture comes in public, many people vote for the latter providing similar examples that an immigrant offended the regulation while following their own custom. However, these are wrong example of the original controversy because following the new country's rule and social norm is different with following their custom. In my opinion, immigrant should keep their native culture unless it conflicts with the norm of new society.
First off, preserving their own culture is extremely important to keep the minority groups' identities. I remembered the last prom party when I graduated the high school in U.S, there I felt very uncomfortable because of my clothes. I thought I have to follow the dress code of American prom party - sexy dress with a lot of exposure of your breast - , which directly objects to our traditional norm. However, while I felt embarrassed to hide in the darkness of a corner, a Japanese girl in Kimono, Japanese traditional custom, became a fashion star surrounded by a lot of their admirers. She looked confident and knew well where she was from. Like this, keeping their native culture helps young immigrants to become self-confident and to develop their identities well balanced.
Not only for immigrants, is it also recommendable for the new country that the minority groups keep their valuably diverse culture. Various cultures and customs from other countries can provide the abundant nourishment to the new country's culture. For example, the pizza was imported by early Italian immigrant of U.S. However, now the pizza is one the favorite food for overall America. If the early immigrant from Italy had given up keeping their food culture, there might not have been this benefit.
To sum up, I strongly insist that to preserve their native culture should be recommended to the immigrant, not only for themselves, but also for the host country. By letting them to just keep it as long as they can, both the immigrant and the new country will benefit. | |
