It is often said that an internship or a work experience is beneficial to students. Some people may be opposed to this statement because students have an enought opportunity to experience work at their real workplace and it is much better to concentrate on their study when they are students. However, I definitely believe that an internship is positively influential to the extent that it affects to students' successful life. This is because a work experience provides students with a chance to check their suitability to the field. What is more, it helps students adapt to workplace better.
Fist of all, students can confirm whether the area of work is well-suited for them by participating in the internship program. This is because although they are very knowledgeable to the fields academically, there are enormous gaps between a reality and an imagination. Students are more likely to have abstract and obscure information on the on-the-spot work. For instance, according to a recent study, 40% of the seniors who experienced an internship replied that they felt a big difference between the theory and the real work environments. Among them, 80% of the students responded that if they had not taken part in the program, they may be stuck in the workplace which cannot be matched with their aptitude.
Also, it is no wonder that students can be more professional and specialized through a work experience. One significant reason is that an internship strengthens students' fundamental work ability which increases the efficiency of work. For example, my brother partook in the internship program and could learn about basic process of the field where he wanted to be specialized. Thanks to the experience, after he entered the area, he could complete all of the work more easily and quickly. On the other hand, his co-worker who had no real working experiences always has a difficulty in accomplishing simple tasks, which even has a negative effect on promoting.
In short, I strongly believe that internship program should be a requisite process to all students. Through this experience, students are able to be more discreet to their selection of work and they can be more professional in their scopes. |
