Those who consider the result as their primary concern might say that university students do not have to attend class if they can do well on their final test or paper without taking classes. However, I personally disagree with the topic for several reasons. First, classes are very useful. Second, you cannot evaluate someone’s understanding of subject just by a test or paper.
To begin with, going to class gives students a chance to learn, which is the point of university. There are lots of things you can get from listening to professor’s lecture. Also, participating a class discussion will surely give you some speaking skills which you need when you work for a company. Moreover, students can ask questions whenever they want and professor will explain about your question very comprehensively. On the other hands, if students skip classes, they will miss these chances to get a variety of knowledge.
Furthermore, just one test cannot predict the understanding of lecture. Professors should watch their student’s in-class performances such as participation of discussion or assignments. When students who do not attend classes, however, professors cannot evaluate their in-class performances. Students might study hard and merely memorize all information to write a paper or test which are remained in their brain for temporarily temporary. The purpose of university education is not to give them credits but to teach them useful academic information and help them to utilize that information in their real life.
In conclusion, in my opinion, students should come to class in order to get credit. Attending class is helpful in many ways such as developing speaking ability or participation. Also, only one test or paper is not an appropriate form of assessing students’ understanding of subject. Therefore, I strongly disagree with the statement. |
