A great number of students nowadays prefer to take classes that guarantee high scores, rather than classes that are hard to follow and overwhelming. Given the choice between easy classes and challenging classes however, I would choose hard and challenging classes for there is much to be gained. Students can study harder and learn how to overcome a failure.
To start with, challenging classes allow students to build up hardworking attitude. If a class is too easy to understand and thus gives out high score with little effort, students will obviously not pay much attention during the class and jam the material when test comes along. This will allow students to acquire a bad habit; not working hard and getting a good result. From my personal experience, I took French conversation class last year whose professor was famous for “charity business” since he gave “A” to almost all the students. As one missing lecture didn’t have any bad effect on exam score, I and my friends would causally skip the class. I crammed the course just one day before the test, which was possible due to the extremely easy contents. After the end of the semester I realized I didn’t learned a page for 6 months, and it was a great waste of time whereas my friends in other classes improved their own academic skills. This case shows how an easy class can spoil the students in bad ways.
Secondly, hard classes teach students what a failure is, and by doing so lead them to overcome hardships beyond textbooks. With a demanding homework and lecture that is hard to grasp, students will have to struggle to understand the material. Those classes sometimes give unexpectedly low grade, or keep students under pressure. However, by the time the class is over, students actually have developed an important ability. They face a great wall and try to break it down. This allows students to solve various problems in their life that seem so complicated and hard to manage. For example, after I ruined half a year in French conversation class I volunteered to take the Chemistry class. This has been the subject that always frustrated me with lowest grades ever. However I decided to finish this course successfully and reviewed the material regularly. I privately visited the professor and asked questions often, and spent much time solving chemistry exercises. Then I finally got B in Chemistry. Although it was not the highest score, I not only gained the confidence that I can deal with any difficult things in my life, but also understood the meaning of “hard working pays back.”
To sum up, it’s evident that challenging classes are worthwhile to take. Reasons behind this are that it makes students develop the habit of hardworking and experience difficulty and lead them to solve it through much effort.
