Some people think that the most essential component which teachers must contain is professional knowledge in their fields. However, in my opinion, relationships with students are of greater importance than the amount of information in their majors. This is because giving knowledge is not the only task of teachers, and diverse factors such as connection with students are also significant in teaching. To begin with, there are a lot of other works that must be done by teachers. Teachers have a great deal of cases to treat their students. This is because students might hope to meet teachers in order to consult about their individual concerns, think over their future careers together, and so on. For example, there was a poll conducted by the Department of Education in Seoul National University with 500 students who attend middle or high school as respondents. The main purpose of this survey was to understand the consensus view about the most important responsibility of teachers. As a result, the majority of respondents ranked other tasks over teaching. In detail, an overwhelming 63 percent had claimed that individual conversation with students about admission is the most important, while only 14 percent had replied that teaching in class is the most instrumental work of teachers. This could be attributed to other important tasks which students hope for their teachers to be accountable for. The result of this survey proves that just becoming an expert in major is not central to being a good teacher. On top of that, there are other pivotal factors that affect the teaching ability. It cannot be a good class by just informing students of a wealth of knowledge. The impression of teachers and their skills to lead the ambience of class are crucial in making a good lecture as well. In this case, good relationships with students can serve as a catalyst to improve such techniques. For instance, I would like to take an example of my biology teacher in high school. She knew a great deal of information about biology, so she always tried to tell us about her knowledge as much as possible. However, she was not that kind and was aloof in every aspect, so my friends were not willing to follow her instruction. Thus, her lectures were always full of bad evaluation when students had a chance to assess the classes. My experience shows that connection between students and teachers is one of the key factors which determine the teaching ability. To sum up, teachers are not solely in charge of teaching, and knowledge is not the only component to make a satisfying lecture. In this regard, I firmly believe that teachers ought to put effort into connecting themselves with their students well. |
