▶ Your Answer :
In the reading passage, there is ample
support for the author's claim that there are three methods regarding carbon sequestration. However, professor in the
lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author's point.
First, the professor contends that the
method of using phytoplankton will not be utilized permanently. When the amount
of phytoplankton increase, they will require a lot of nitrogen to survive.
Thus, they will be decreased because of the lack of nitrogen. Also, they cannot
reduce the amount of carbon dioxide up to 3%. This casts doubt on the reading
passage's claim that multiplying the number of phytoplankton by adding iron to
the water can be useful.
Next, the professor insists that artificial
wetland is not useful as natural one. Artificial wetland is not same as natural
swamp, so its efficiency of reducing carbon dioxide is 23% less than the
natural one. In addition, artificial swamp needs long time to develop fully.
This counters the reading passage's assertion that artificial wetland can
lessen the processes of decomposing oxygen.
Finally, the professor argues that carbon
dioxide which is in coal mine will be leached into the atmosphere. This is because that when carbon dioxide makes a bond with
coal, it generated methane which is used by an energy source. However, since
methane has carbon in it, using methane as
energy source will make carbon dioxide reproduce and spread into the
atmosphere. This refutes the reading passage's suggestion that carbon dioxide
can be stored in coal mines for years because carbon dioxide attaches to the coal.
